London||Cau, Blackheath

On Firework night (Saturday 5th November) we decided to go and take a wander into Blackheath to catch their free Firework display and to check out their fun fair & food and drink, which they usually put up during the same weekend. The Fireworks were due to start at 8pm so we decided to book into Cau which is located right opposite Blackheath's famous church on the common (where the display was being held). Here is a little review of our time spent at Cau, Blackheath.

Ok so first thing I think I need to mention about the restaurant is.. make sure you BOOK well in advance, if you, like us are planning to eat here during busy public events! I didn't book our table until around 5pm the evening before and the restaurant was already pretty much full up. Luckily for us there was one slot left for two people at 7pm, this worked out brilliantly because the fireworks started st 8pm anyways, the only other time slot they had though was 4pm that afternoon! So I cannot stress enough MAKE SURE YOU BOOK EARLY.

Secondly be prepared for crowding! If again, you are someone like me who likes to be able to sit at a table with a lot of space and usually in a quiet part of the restaurant, you may as well forget this on busy evenings.  On the evening we came we literally got whatever table came first, and a table swap was definitely out of the question. We were put next to two families with small children (something I hate usually, but am trying to learn how to deal with this)It did get a tad annoying when one of the small children decided to constantly kick the back of my chair as soon as I sat down, but it was soon sorted out when our waiter had a quiet word with the child's parents. They shortly left after, so the rest of the meal was quite peaceful luckily. Admittedly it wasn't the restaurant's fault, and the staff were ever so helpful and efficient in trying to make me more comfortable even though we wasn't allowed to move tables, so you may want to bear this is mind when eating in a busy place like this restaurant.

Drinks:
The menu was amazing, especially the drinks menu they had some really inventive ones on there I especially enjoyed their lemon meringue cocktail. It was so delicious, but very sweet- you could only manage a few of these!

I also liked another one of their quirky creations called 'Bright Blue Skies' this one was made with 'Black Cow vodka, Cointreau, egg white with chilled chamomile tea, It was also served with some blue bubblegum candy floss on the side which was a lovely little touch.  (I think we enjoyed the candy floss the most!).

I tried one more of their signature's on the list called The Cau girl Martin, this was Cau's take on the 'Porn star Martini' it was sweeter though, and served with sparkling rose instead of prosecco.  It was made with Absolut vanilla vodka, passion fruit puree, apple, vanilla sugar & sparkling rose.

Mains:
Once we sank a few cocktails we picked our mains, we both opted for Steak of course. I went for their 220gram Medallion fillet Lomito well done, with a side of Baked Sweet Potato and some Pepper Sauce, my other half opted for their 400gram Lomito cut also well done, with a side of thin cut chips and a Pepper Sauce also. The meal was out of this world, everything complimented each other so well. The Steak was even though cooked well done, still lovely juicy and tender. The sauce was creamy with a hint of the peppercorn, and the Sweet Potatoes were lovely and buttery and moist. I could have easily gone back for seconds.

Dessert:

Dessert was the winner for me! They had my most favourite on there 'Churro's' and they were even better than expected. They were warm served with a lovely gooey pot of Dulche de leche  and sprinkled with cinnamon. They were the perfect end to a perfect meal, and they really got us in the mood for the cold outside. I would recommend sharing these, as even though they probably don't look that big you do get quite a few of them and they are very filing.

The Verdict:
To say Cau might be up there with Gaucho's is a pretty big statement, and for me it hasn't quite beaten Gaucho's yet. However considering the quality (which was surprising) and the low price of the meal,  (our bill came to just shy of £100.00 includes the 6 cocktails and dessert for 2), I would definitely say it is not far behind its rival

The only thing that let this dining experience down for based on the time we visited, was the fact that the restaurant is quite small, and it did get really over crowded. I would have liked to been able to have chosen a bigger table in a more quieter area, but I am sure this could have been arranged had we gone on a different evening. So I won't knock down too many points here.

 The decor is  not as fancy as Gaucho's but I guess you would expect that from somewhere were the menu is half the price.  I think we would definitely come back here but on a less busy evening. I would quite like to try out their roast dinner one Sunday, I have seen photo's of that and I must say it looks delicious.  All in all the meal and drinks were fantastic and very enjoyable as well as reasonably price, and for that I cannot fault the restaurant. Cau hold us a table, we will be returning soon!
